An enquiry form collects information from people outside the organisation. Its design therefore includes more than labels and a submit button. A business owner does not need to inspect every line of code, but should know what is collected, where it goes and who can access it. Use the following questions during implementation and support reviews, alongside a developer's assessment of the actual system.
Collect only what the enquiry needs
Ask whether each required field helps the team respond. Explain the purpose of the form in plain language and avoid requesting passwords or unnecessary sensitive documents. Confirm which staff members receive enquiries and how access is removed when responsibilities change. A clear owner should be able to describe the handling process. This makes data collection a deliberate business decision rather than an accumulation of fields copied from another website.
Check validation and database handling
Browser validation improves feedback, but server-side checks must still handle unexpected submissions. Ask developers how length limits, required fields and accepted values are enforced. Where information is stored in SQL, OWASP recommends parameterised queries as a primary defence against SQL injection. Input filtering is not a reason to assemble SQL from untrusted text. These measures should be reviewed in the implementation rather than inferred from how polished the form looks.
Review uploads and failure paths
If attachments are necessary, agree on permitted formats, size limits, storage access and authorised download behaviour. Test the experience for an oversized file, a rejected format and an interrupted submission. Avoid exposing internal error details in the visitor message. Confirm how the system prevents accidental duplicate requests and how staff distinguish a completed enquiry from an abandoned attempt. Any security challenge should be checked by the server.
Verify operation with a controlled test
Use clearly labelled test data and confirm both the visitor result and the staff-side delivery. Check that an error can be corrected without losing important input unnecessarily. Review who maintains the form and how issues are escalated. A successful test is evidence about the tested path at that time; it is not a guarantee against every possible attack. Repeat relevant checks after changes to the form, uploads or delivery system.
