Website Maintenance: A Practical Monthly Checklist for Business Owners

A website remains a business responsibility after launch. Contact details change, software receives updates and enquiry forms can stop working without an obvious visual warning. A short maintenance routine gives the owner a way to spot problems early. The aim is not to generate a large technical report, but to confirm that visitors can still complete the tasks the site was built to support.

Check the visitor journey

Open the homepage, key service pages and contact page on a phone and a desktop browser. Follow the main enquiry links and verify that telephone and email links point to current details. Use a clearly labelled test enquiry when checking delivery, and confirm that the responsible team receives it. Review the message shown after submission so visitors know whether their request succeeded or needs correction.

Review content and changes

Check addresses, service descriptions, working hours and important links. Remove outdated promotional dates and verify any claims before retaining them. Keep a short change record showing what was updated, who checked it and when. For technical updates, arrange a recoverable backup and a suitable test process before applying changes. Assign responsibility for reviewing the result rather than assuming that an update command proves the website still works.

Check backups through recovery

Determine which information must be recoverable: application code, database records, uploaded media and essential configuration. Backup methods depend on the software and database engine; an approach suitable for one system may not be suitable for another. Store recovery instructions securely and test restoration in an isolated environment. A filename or successful upload confirms that something was saved, but does not by itself establish that the business can recover.

Agree on ownership and escalation

Document who controls the domain, hosting account and support relationship. Give the team a clear way to report an unavailable website or missing enquiries. Decide how often recovery exercises and access reviews should occur based on the site's importance. Keep routine checks simple enough to repeat. A useful monthly record states what was tested, what failed, who will fix it and how completion will be confirmed.
